Like newspapers, sports tournaments are ideal when they come in fours. Which is why I agree with most people who say the Division III tournament is a joke when the format of 21 teams and three pools makes no sense. Just go with a 20 or 24 team tournament. Besides, some of those teams didn’t deserve to be in the NCAA tournament anyway…talking to you Kenyon! But I do think if you are in a conference and win the championship, you should get to play in the NCAA tournament. Which is why it sucks to be the Landmark Conference Champion until they get an AQ.

Anyway…Here’s what did happen in the play-in round:

Bowdoin vs Mt Ida-Bowdoin won the game 11-5 and will now face their conference foe Middlebury in Vermont on Saturday the 10th. Game time is at 1pm EST for anyone who lives in Vermont, or just wants to get away for the weekend for a good lax game and some liberal politics.

Denison vs Widener-Denison gave Widener a beat down 19-6, though Widener kept it close after the first quarter 4-3. The Big Red outscored Widener 9-2 in the second frame, shut out Widener in the third quarter, and outscored Widener 4-1 in the fourth. Next up for Denison is a game in Gettysburg against the #3 ranked Bullets. Game is at 1pm EST on Saturday the 10th.

Ohio Wesleyan vs. Kenyon- OWU beat Kenyon 12-8. Kenyon kept things pretty close, they were tied with the Battling Bishops at the end of the third quarter, but OWU blew them away in the fourth for a rematch with Salisbury, who they lost to 14-10 earlier this season. Game is in Salisbury, MD at 7:30pm EST on Saturday, so you can go to Ocean City and hang out before the game.

Western New England vs Western Connecticut- This game was no contest as WNE destroyed West Conn by 10 goals, 14-4. The Colonials didn’t even show up until the second half as they were shut out 10-0 in the first. They must have been watching Springfield and Kean warm up. WNE moves on to play at St. Lawerence on 2pm EST Saturday.

Kean vs. Springfield-Springfield obliterated Kean 17-2, shutting out Kean in the second half. Maybe they just had tickets to the Basketball Hall of Fame and needed to leave early! Springfield will now play Cortland State. Game time is at 1pm EST on the 10th at Cortland.
